Brian Kelly links Jayden Daniels and the Commanders for the second time in as many weeks
Matthew Dobbins-USA TODAY Sports

Exactly two weeks ago, LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly grabbed the entire attention of the Washington Commanders fanbase when he said Jayden Daniels will "make plays for Washington".

"This is a guy that is a pro this past year and the way he took care of himself," Kelly told WUSA9's Chick Hernandez  during LSU's pro day back in March. "You're not going to have to worry about him. He is going to be so committed to taking care of himself that you're not going to have to worry about size or he doesn't weigh enough. [Baltimore Ravens quarterback] Lamar [Jackson's] done a pretty good job with his size.

"[Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick] Mahomes - I wouldn't consider him a giant. [Daniels is] going to get the ball out to the playmakers and make plays for Washington."

The comment was obviously Kelly's opinion. It wasn't a leak nor a prediction. Still, it's always interesting to hear one of the country's top coaches -someone who is at the top of business's food change and someone who is obviously well connected- make a statement like that.

Well, Kelly doubled down and even made a prediction about Daniels' future NFL home during the latest episode of the God Bless Football podcast.

"It seems as though Chicago's made a decision, that's just my opinion. I don't have any firsthand information, but... I think Washington and New England are both great landing spots for him," said Kelly.  "And again, look, Drake Maye's a great quarterback, but I think Jayden has that ability to change the complexion of a game.

"He's a veteran guy. He's experienced. He's been in the SEC. He's really, I think, ready to go in and play. I think, you know, if you're pushing me on this, I think he goes two."

Again, this is Kelly's opinion and he's going to advocate for his guy before anyone else. It's important to remember, though, the idea of Daniels and the Commanders continues to gain more and more steam. Despite contrary, inaccurate reports that Daniels, himself, is calling out.

"You know, Daniels' year was Heisman Trophy-worthy. His ability to take over a game, [in] my 33 years, I don't know that I've had a quarterback that just can change the complexion of the game so quickly. Whether he threw it or ran it."

Kelly's point is driven home by the fact that Daniels is the first, and only, player to throw for more than 12,000 yards and run for more than 3,000 yards over the course of their collegiate career. The kid can make throws on all three levels and has the work ethic and leadership to continue his development at the next level.

Of course, there are plenty of things to work on. For starters, Daniels needs to bulk up (without affecting his game too much, of course), he needs to limit the "hero plays" he tries to make, and he needs to learn to stay with his progressions a little longer before taking off.

All of those are coachable flaws, however. Ultimately, Daniels makes a ton of sense and it won't be a surprise if his explosive, all-around abilities are the deciding factors behind him getting drafted by the Commanders at No. 2.
