Pistons bench player becomes the latest and most improbable member of 50-point club

What do Joel Embiid, Devin Booker, Luka Doncic and Malachi Flynn have in common? Give up? They've all scored 50 points in a game this season.

No, it's not April Fool's Day. It's the NBA in 2024.

On Wednesday, Flynn had the game of his life, dropping 50 points off the bench for the Detroit Pistons, albeit in a 121-113 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. The No. 29 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft becomes the 10th player this season to reach 50 points and by far the most unlikely member of the list.

Flynn joins Booker (three times), Embiid (three times) and Doncic (twice) in tallying a 50-point game, but his resume doesn't match up with the rest of the field. Including the aforementioned trio, the list boasts 42 combined All-Star nods, five regular-season MVP winners, four scoring champs and two Finals MVPs.

Meanwhile, Flynn is on his third NBA team this season, coming off the bench for the worst squad in the league. Before Wednesday, he'd seen action in 63 contests with the Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks and Pistons, averaging five points over 12 minutes per game. Likewise, he's posted five points with two assists and two rebounds per game over four professional seasons.

His high in points this season was 17 against the New Orleans Pelicans on March 24, with his previous career high of 27 points coming during his rookie season.

Remarkably, Flynn scored 50 points on 18-of-25 shooting. He joins Doncic, Jalen Brunson and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the only players this season to shoot 70 percent or better from the field and reach the half-century mark in points, per StatMuse
