Why Joey Porter Jr.'s rookie contract situation is so complicated

Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. remains the only rookie on the Steelers who has yet to sign his rookie deal. However, it's much more complicated than some realize. Here's why.

Round one or two?

Porter Jr. was selected by Pittsburgh with the in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft (32nd overall). However, in any other year, pick No. 32 would be a first-round pick. 

That wasn't the case this year because the Dolphins had to forfeit their first-round pick after violating the league's policies pertaining to the integrity of the game, resulting in there being only 31 first-round picks.

Why is that so important? 

First-round picks typically have more guaranteed money in their contract compared to second rounders. So, the Steelers must decide what they view Porter Jr. as.

Rookie standoff

It's standard that teams look at what contracts were given to players drafted before and after its rookies to help guide negotiations.

Chiefs edge-rusher Felix Anudike-Uzomah, the last pick in the first round (No. 31), and Lions TE Sam LaPorta, the 34th overall pick, each agreed to their rookie deals. Anudike-Uzomah received $11.817M in guarantees while LaPorta got $7.517M in guaranteed money.

However, Titans QB Will Levis, the 33rd overall pick, has yet to agree to his rookie contract. So, it seems both Porter Jr. and Levis are in a rookie standoff to see who signs first. One of those deals getting done may help provide some clarity for the other one.

Holdout?

If the two sides can't reach an agreement by the start of training camp, it's very possible Porter Jr. could decide to holdout. That is the worst-case scenario for Pittsburgh, as it has high expectations for the rookie in 2023.

Training camp is important as players put on the pads for the first time, and this is particularly true for rookies. Porter Jr. must practice to learn the defense and prove he can contribute this season.
